Tucked in a row of commercial spaces on 47th Street, right off Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia, Grill Fish Café might be easy to pass by. Its small footprint is overshadowed by Vietnam Cafe, its larger sister restaurant next door, but this might just be the best part about it. The tiny interior is intimate and quiet, with calming dark colors, and vivid photographs of scenes from Vietman hang on the walls. The waitstaff provide friendly, unobtrusive service, and mellow music enhances the relaxed feel.

Owner Benny Lai has built his reputation at both locations of Vietnam Cafe on the authentic, bold flavors of his homeland and Grill Fish is no different, though the menu is edited and fine tuned in comparison. As you might expect from the name, seafood is the star of the show here, though land creatures also have their opportunity to shine. The menu begins with an appetizers selection heavy on mollusks and crustaceans: grilled squid and fried calamari, shrimp three different ways (grilled, crispy, or in pancakes), and mussels or clams steamed in aromatic broths.

Entrees run the gamut, from pan-fried fluke to a whole cornish hen. On a recent visit, the Hanoi Fish (a hot pot of tilapia in a dill-infused broth), and the Shaking Beef (wonderfully tender cuts of marinated beef tenderloin on a bed of soy-vinaigrette dressed watercress) were highlights. Throughout the generous portions, the flavors were exciting, but balanced. Fresh herbs, hints of lemongrass and chili, veggies and peanuts all made their apperances, but in nuanced ways that set the dishes apart from less creative Vietnamese fare.

Desserts are more standard, with a rotation of ice creams and cakes listed on the specials board. Drinks-wise, Grill Fish bats for both teams: a small selection of beer, wines, and cocktails are available for purchase Friday through Sunday, and the restaurant is BYOB Tuesday through Thursday (no corkage fee!). Grill Fish is only open for dinner, and is closed on Mondays.


Hollandaise is a wonderfully rich, lemony and buttery sauce that goes with all kinds of poached and grilled fish dishes as well as eggs and vegetables. It's a classic sauce, but you don't need to be a master chef to make it.

The Bercy sauce, named after a district in the east of Paris, is a finished sauce for fish and seafood dishes. It's made by reducing white wine and chopped shallots and then simmering in a basic fish velouté.

Flying Fish

Flying Fish is a signature restaurant that serves gourmet seafood to guests on Disney World’s BoardWalk!

Many tout both the sea and land dishes here. (The Char-Crusted New York Strip is a favorite among landlubbers.) The location reopened in summer of 2016 after a major makeover — complete with a lovely glass school of fish “swimming” above — with an emphasized focus on seasonal, sustainable fare.

6 of the Healthiest Fish to Eat (And 4 to Avoid)

Chicken breasts and ground beef are common weeknight fare, but it's time to start adding more fish! Here's the scoop on some of the healthiest fish to eat on the regular and a few fish types to avoid due to safety or sustainability.

Seafood is usually a win-win in our book. First, it’s downright delicious. Second, it’s incredibly nutritious—serving as a source of lean protein key minerals like zinc, iron, selenium and often also good-for-you omega-3 fats (depending on which type of seafood you’re eating). Plus, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends we eat seafood twice a week while aiming to eat a variety of seafood. Some people, like pregnant and nursing women, and children, need to also seek out safer fish𠅊ka lower in mercury. Mercury is a toxic metal that can lead to neurological and kidney damage, and is especially dangerous to pregnant women and developing children as it can cause birth defects. That said, if you’re pregnant, don’t eliminate seafood from your diet. That’s because eating it during pregnancy may lower the risk of high blood pressure disorders and preterm birth, and lead to better brain development, language, and communication skills in children, says the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s 2020 Scientific Report. Sometimes making healthy choices for both yourself and the planet isn&apost simple, but there are plenty of resources out there to help.

Seafood Watch, a program run by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, has combed through data from health organizations and environmental groups to come up with easy-to-understand recommendations for seafood harvested all over the globe. Look for their "Best Choices" labeled in green on the site.

Another easy way to identify good picks is to look for the blue Marine Stewardship Council label when you&aposre shopping—it identifies certified sustainable seafood. The Safina Center, an ecology-focused non-profit organization,ਊlso offers a listing of sustainability ratings and detailed information on specific fish, while the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) provides up-to-date mercury notices. And what if you eat fish caught by family or friends or that you&aposve caught yourself? Look for fish advisories put out by local health or fish and game departments.

For the healthiest fish, look no further than this list. We took safety (in the form of mercury) and the environment into consideration, too, when building this list of the best fish to eat. We also culled a list of some examples of fish to keep off your plate.


Since there’s no breading, I find the fastest and easiest way to cook the cod for fish tacos is in a skillet so you get a little char. You can broil them if you prefer, or cook them on the grill on foil in the summer.
