If you're camping, this is a delicious way to prepare dinner. If you don't have a campfire, you can do this with your BBQ.

  • 4 whole trout, cleaned and head removed
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 60g butter, divided
  • 1 medium green pepper, sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  1. Place each trout on a piece of aluminium foil. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then stuff each cavity with 1/4 of the butter, green pepper and garlic if using.
  2. Roll the trout tightly in the foil, forming parcels. Use some additional foil to secure each parcel of fish to a metal toasting rod for use as a handle when removing fish from the fire.
  3. Cover the fish parcels in the red hot, smouldering coals of your campfire and cook until the fish is done, 7 to 10 minutes, depending on the heat of the fire.

Made this with trout my husband caught up in AR couple of weeks ago. It was good. A little boring for me but still easy and came out very flaky and tender. My husband thought it was good too.-17 Aug 2010

I have cooked trout this way for years. However I use stuffing mix (stovetop our similar) to fill the fish. Works easily with campfire our on grill. I also place thin sliced butter between foul and fish inn each side. The fish skin will peel right off with the foil when you open it and leaves a moist, flavorful trout with it's own side dish. Perfect when camping and fresh caught trout.-10 Oct 2013
